Stambaugh goes wire to wire in GLSS feature, Brennan Sherman wins 2nd career Modified feature and Todd Sherman bounces back from Modified crash to win

Despite a Thursday that saw heavy storms hit the Limaland quarter-mile, and the threat of rain looming on Friday, Ryan Hasenfratz had the track readied to perfection on Friday night for the Season Opening Shootout presented by Smith Boughan. Hometown hero Max Stambaugh piloted the Smith Racing No. 71H to victory in the 25 lap GLSS Ohio CAT Sprint Car feature, No. 82 Brennan Sherman won the DIRTcar UMP Modified feature, and No. 60 Todd Sherman picked up the Lock Sixteen Thunderstock win.

Kicking off racing action were the GLSS Ohio CAT Sprint Car for their 25 lap feature event with No. 71 Max Stambaugh on the pole. Stambaugh would battle the first couple laps with No. 85 Dustin Daggett, but would pull away and seemingly be sailing away with the win until lap 15, when No. 11G Luke Griffith spun at the bottom of turn four, bringing out the only caution of the race. With the field bunched back up for the restart, Stambaugh proved to be too much for the field as he would pick up the victory over Daggett by 2.6 seconds, with No. X Mike Keegan third, No. 29 Zeth Sabo fourth, and No. 49T Gregg Dalman rounding out the top 5.

Next up were the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds for their 20 lap feature event. Brennan Sherman and No. 14 Dalton Lane would lead the field to green, with Brennan taking the lead. No. 21C Drew Charlson and No. 18 Ryan Sutter made slight contact in turn two on lap two and the field bunched up avoiding the mishap, but ultimately staying green. The race would be plagued with multiple cautions, but the worst came on a restart on lap 15, defending track champion Todd Sherman would have a front end break exiting turn 2 while running in the fifth position. The closing field made contact with Sherman’s No 65, turning the machine into the backstretch wall and nearly getting upside down. The crash rung Todd’s bell, he was evaluated by paramedics and he would walk away under his own power. His son Brennan would power away with the final five laps of the race to grab his second career victory over No. 34x Shane O’Connor, Charlson, Lane, and No. 16 Jeff Koz completed the top 5.

Completing the night’s racing were the Lock Sixteen Thunderstocks for their 15 lap A Main. Polesitter Dan Wooten’s No. 7 would break before the green flag, handing the pole to UNOH Racer Tyler Matheny in the UNOH No. 01. Matheny and No. 82 Chris Douglas would battle first lap and a half before Douglas would grab the point. No. 26 Justin Long would begin to battle with Douglas, taking the lead on lap 6. Caution would fly on lap 8, and on the restart, Long would resume the lead until coming around to turn four where he would spin and bring the caution back out. On the restart, No. 60 Todd Sherman would battle past Douglas and pull away with the victory. Sherman would prevail over Douglas, defending Thunderstock track champ No. 22T Tony Anderson, No. 11 UNOH Racer Houston Null, and Tyler Matheny completed the top 5.
